The Secret of Happiness
In the name of Allah the beneficent, the Merciful
While working on my dissertation I came across a book by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (wow long name huh?), a psychologist who talks about 'happiness' (my dissertation topic). As I was reading through his book, I came across a paragraph which I was surprised to read as I didn't expect a non-muslim psychologist to come up with a conclusion like this one. He wrote:
'When people try to acheive happiness on their own, without the support of a faith, they usually seek to maximize pleasures that are either biologically progarmmed in their genes or are out as attractive by the society in which they live. Wealth, power, and sex become the chief goals that give direction to their 'strivings'.
But the quality of life cannot be improved this way. Only direct Control of experience, the ability to derive moment-by-moment enjoyment from everything we do, can overcome the obtstacles to fulfillment'.
And if we look around today, this is what we see everywhere ? People have neglected their beliefs and are occupied with worldly desires and pleasures.They tend to hold things that are valued by people around them and ignore the things that are commanded by their God.
Isn't it amazing that these psychologists have only come up with these conclusions after years of reasearch and experience and we as Muslims look at these statements as Common Sense as all of these things have been openly and clearly explained by Allah (SWT) in the Qur'an 1400 yrs ago.
Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction.
