Reasons to be Cheerful

Yes, it’s good to be cheerful, but is it sane to be needlessly over cheerful around the clock?
Prophet Muhammad said: “…do not laugh much for much laughter causes the heart to die”

Intentionally or unintentionally everyone’s trying to earn inner bliss and gratification. People try to appear ‘cool’ 24/7 and remain under the fake impression that they are leading a very happy life. Yes, it’s good to be cheerful, but is it sane to be needlessly over cheerful around the clock?
We meet many people who remain cheerful all the time; their face always wears a smile. Meeting such a person makes you feel pleasant yourself. Doctors also say that leading a cheerful life is good for your health. The problem is when people start to become too cheerful, and spend half of their time laughing singing and dancing. Such people show their unawareness of the problems of their fellow human beings throughout the world. While in one part of the world people are being mercilessly butchered, and when millions of people are starving for a morsel of food, it seems illogical to be over-cheerful.
Prophet Muhammad said: “…do not laugh much for much laughter causes the heart to die” [1]
People have different reasons for being cheerful. Feeling cheerful for no reason is viewed as stupidity. One should feel happy due to a genuine reason, not on matters that has nothing to do with him. I fail to understand how people go crazy with happiness when their favorite football player scores a goal or when their favorite actor gets an Oscar award. These events have nothing to do with our lives, and do not really affect us in any way.
Muslims are unique in their approach to entertainment. The normal world view of struggle to earn a bank balance that gives freedom to cheer up ourselves with some world tours and cinema rounds, doesn’t coincide with our teachings on entertainment. We are directed to keep meaningful entertainment and hobbies. And as for things that don’t concern us:
“Those who witness no falsehood, and, if they pass by futility, they pass by it with honorable (avoidance)” [2]
Another example of being cheerful as a negative thing can be seen in most parties. People, when they get together, tend to go overboard. They start to sing and dance for no obvious reason and this gives rise to many vices.
However, being gloomy and grumpy all the time also has problems. It leads to depression and people lose activism. Few people tend to look really engrossed into thoughts all the time, and they give a religious look to it. Although, Prophet Muhammad used to smile the most:
Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Harith narrated. I did not see anyone smiling more than Allah’s Messenger. [3]
And he was made to balance his religious concerns, that shouldn’t affect his overall personality.
“Then maybe you will kill yourself with grief, sorrowing after them, if they do not believe in this announcement.”[4]
ALLAH has set limits for everything and one’s emotions should also be moderate and not on any extreme.
“And thus We have made you a medium (just) nation that you may be the bearers of witness to the people…” [5]
One needs to balance between the two extremes. Cheerfulness is definitely a gift of God, but being too cheerful at all times for no reason show ones unrealistic approach towards life, life is a serious matter for believers and can not be spent neglectfully. Find valid reasons to be cheerful, and then work to earn those reasons, and smile whenever you meet people, like Prophet Muhammad.

Complete Hadith: Sayyidina Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) asked, “Who will learn from these words and act upon them, or teach to one who will act upon them?
