The channelized melody of Qur’an will direct us into a world of spiritual ascension and physical activism, which will leave no room for meaningless hip-hop and rock beats.
Walking towards the university on a usual chilly day of Glasgow, but, today I had my head phones on. Suran an-Najm was the current track. I said to myself : “Man, it isn’t that cold today”. Surprisingly the temperature suggested it’s as cold as it had been for the last few days. But today I was walking freely in contrast to the usual wobbly ‘winter’ walk. Suddenly, I had a quick flash back to the good old college days. In the cold winter days, I used to sit in the open courtyard of the masjid after Fajr so that I could recite Qur’an loudly. I experienced that I felt no cold while reciting Qur’an loudly. But, if I would just sit there, I’d start shivering. This isn’t a haphazard coincidence; these are marvels of Qur’anic audionics and harmonics.
Qur’an is a miracle of literary perfection, unique literary style and genre. It mentions striking truths regarding celestial bodies and microscopic elements. It perfects the psychological and philosophical thoughts. It lays down error-free laws of spiritual ascension and socio-economic foundation of societies and states. Every Ayah of the book holds multi-dimensional meanings and miraculous signs. With the progression of time, the books miraculous nature is becoming more evident. An evident miracle of Qur’an is the capturing and hypnotizing effect of the divine harmonics and audionics. I call it the ‘resonate-break’ effect; the only melody on the face of the earth that has the power to resonate with the invisible dimensions of the self and provide inner peace and when we break-out of the captivating effect it fuels us up to actively work and spread the message of Qur’an.
The literary and audionic miracles of Qur’an were too obvious to deny for the people of Makkah. The non-believer who had filled their hearts with the hatred of the book, themselves resonated with it when Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم was reciting Surah an-Najm near the Ka’aba and at the end of the Surah they automatically broke-up into prostration on the Ayah of Prostration (Sajdah) [1]. The divine melody moved the animate and inanimate objects in the times of Dawood علبه السلام: “...O mountains! Sing praises with him and the birds” [2]. This unmatched effect of Qur’anic harmonics has the power to wake-up dead hearts and fuel-up others.
Numerous sayings of Prophet Muhammad highlight the importance of this melodious nature of the Holy Qur’an, and our responsibility as bearers of the message to beautify Qur’an with our voices.
زَيِّنُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَصْوَاتِكُمْ
Adorn the Qur’an with your voices. [3]
لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَتَغَنَّ بِالْقُرْآنِ
One who does not recite the Qur’an in a melodious voice is not from us! [4]
مَا أَذِنَ اللَّهُ لِشَىْءٍ مَا أَذِنَ لِلنَّبِىِّ أَنْ يَتَغَنَّى بِالْقُرْآنِ
Allah does not listen to anything so attentively as He listens to the Prophet reciting the Qur’an aloud in a sweet voice. [5]
Beyond doubt, Qur’an is not poetry. Allah didn’t limit Himself to any poetic rules or metrics. Nevertheless, Qur’an has a hidden melody that is matchless. Worldly melody can only shake our animalistic self. Qur’anic melody has the power to penetrate to our true self. Qur’an has unrivaled harmonics covered under deep meanings.
The purpose of this write up is to introduce the miraculous dimension of Qur’anic that is related with audio. Furthermore, I want to kindle in all readers the passion to beautify Qur’an with the voices. We make two critical mistakes during recitation:
1- We don’t strive to understand Arabic, so that we understand Qur’an or atleast a portion of it directly in Arabic.
2- We don’t recite Qur’an loudly.
Hence, we tend to completely miss out the sweet harmonic effects of the Qur’an. If we strive to understand Qur’an and beautify Qur’an with our voices, we won’t feel the need of directionless music in our lives. The channelized melody of Qur’an will direct us into a world of spiritual ascension and physical activism, which will leave no room for meaningless hip-hop and rock beats.
I leave you with few incidents from the Golden times of Prophet Muhammad, which tell us how important recitation of Qur’an and its melody was in their lives and how we tend to ignore this right of Qur’an even in our congregational and personal prayers and just complete it in a robotic manner with few fixed recitations.
Abu Musa Ash’ari was reciting the Holy Qur’an in a beautiful manner in the darkness of the night, and Prophet Muhammad was listening to him from a distance. The next day he praised his recitation and said: “If you were to see me, as I was listening to your recitation of the Qur'an last-night (you would have felt delighted). You are in fact endowed with a sweet voice like that of David himself.” [6]
Narrated Abdullah bin Mas’ud: Allah's Apostle said to me, "Recite (of the Qur'an) for me," I said, "Shall I recite it to' you although it had been revealed to you?" He said, "I like to hear (the Qur'an) from others." So I recited Surah-an-Nisa' till I reached: "How (will it be) then when We bring from each nation a witness, and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people?" (Surah an-Nisa 4:41) Then he said, "Stop!" And behold, his eyes were overflowing with tears." [7]
Oh Allah! Bless us with a melodious voice and insight into the Qur’an so that we can recite Your words in a beautiful Manner. Oh Allah! Make us of those who recite Qur’an giving it its Right (Haq).Oh Allah! Grant us the privilege to listen to the recitation of your beloved Prophet Dawood عليه السلام in Jannah!
الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَتْلُونَهُ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِ أُولَٰئِكَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ
Those to whom We have given the Book read it as it ought to be read. These believe in it; and whoever disbelieves in it, these it is that are the losers. [8]
