Ayaat and Ahaadith Condemning Wasting Food
Ayaat of Qur’an and Ahaadith of Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) that tell us the importance of food, and condemn extravagance and wasting good.

وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنشَأَ جَنَّاتٍ مَّعْرُوشَاتٍ وَغَيْرَ مَعْرُوشَاتٍ وَالنَّخْلَ وَالزَّرْعَ مُخْتَلِفًا أُكُلُهُ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُتَشَابِهًا وَغَيْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍ ۚ كُلُوا مِن ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَآتُوا حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ ۖ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
And He it is Who produces gardens (of vine), trellised and untrellised, and palms and seed-produce of which the fruits are of various sorts, and olives and pomegranates, like and unlike; eat of its fruit when it bears fruit, and pay the due of it on the day of its reaping, and do not act extravagantly; surely He does not love the extravagant.

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
O children of Adam! Attend to your embellishments at every time of prayer, and eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely He does not love the extravagant.

عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- كَانَ إِذَا مَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا لَعِقَ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلاَثَ وَقَالَ « إِذَا مَا وَقَعَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ فَلْيُمِطْ عَنْهَا الأَذَى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ ». وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَسْلُتَ الصَّحْفَةَ وَقَالَ « إِنَّكُمْ لاَ تَدْرُونَ فِى أَىِّ طَعَامِكُمُ الْبَرَكَةُ »
Anas bin Maalik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet (Peace be upon him) finished eating, he would lick his three fingers. He would say, “If a morsel of one of you falls down then he must clean it remove the injurious, and eat it and leave it not for the devil.” He commanded us to lick the plate clean, saying, “You cannot imagine in which portion of your meal blessing lies.”

عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ « إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِى فِى أَيَّتِهِنَّ الْبَرَكَةُ »
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) said, “When one of you eats, he must lick his fingers (after finishing), for, he does not know in which of them lies blessing.”

عَنْ جَابِرٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ « إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَسَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةٌ فَلْيُمِطْ مَا رَابَهُ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ لْيَطْعَمْهَا وَلاَ يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ »
Sayyidina Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “When one of you eats his meal and a morsel falls down, he must pick it up and remove the doubtful portion and eat the rest. He must not leave it for the devil.”

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلاَ يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا »
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet said, 'When you eat, do not wipe your hands till you have licked it, or had it licked by somebody else."

حَدَّثَتْنِى جَدَّتِى أُمُّ عَاصِمٍ وَكَانَتْ أُمَّ وَلَدٍ لِسِنَانِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا نُبَيْشَةُ الْخَيْرِ وَنَحْنُ نَأْكُلُ فِى قَصْعَةٍ فَحَدَّثَنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قَالَ « مَنْ أَكَلَ فِى قَصْعَةٍ ثُمَّ لَحِسَهَا اسْتَغْفَرَتْ لَهُ الْقَصْعَةُ »
Umm Aasim (RA) the Umm Walad of Sinan ibn Salamah, narrated: Nubayshah al-Khayr visited us while we were having our meal from a bowl. She said to us that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “If anyone who eats from a bowl and licks it then the bowl seeks forgiveness for him.”

Brief Comments
[1] In many countries around the globe, poor people search for food from the waste dumps. Our extravagance and negligence ends up in the dump and they feed on it. One should search for poor and needy and hand-over them food in clean-bags or packs, rather than them searching for it amongst waste. There have been researches that one-third of the total food bought in many developed countries ends up in the waste.
[2] Wasting food includes throwing cake pieces at each other on parties, that ends up on the floor.
