Signs for the wise

Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who understand.

Duaas on ‘Seeking knowledge’

1- It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “One of the supplications that the Prophet used to say was:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لَا يُسْمَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ
[0 Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, from a supplication that is not heard, from a heart that does not fear (You) and from a soul that is not satisfied].’”
(Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 250, Classified as Sahih By Allama Albani)
2- It was narrated that Abu Hurrairah said: “The Messenger of Allah used to say:
اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ
[0 Allah, benefit me by that which you have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me]
(Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 251, Classified as Sahih By Allama Albani)
3- The Duaa of Angels:
سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ
Glory be to Thee! we have no knowledge but that which Thou hast taught us; surely Thou art the Knowing, the Wise.
(Surah Al Baqarah 2:32)
4- The Duaa of Prophet Musa:
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي
O my Lord! Expand my breast for me, And make my affair easy to me, And loose the knot from my tongue, (That) they may understand my word;
(Surah Taha 20:25-28)
5- Duaa taught by Allah
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
O my Lord! Increase me in knowledge
(Surah Taha 20:114)

Daeef Ahadith on the Subject

We must avoid spreading Daeef (weak) and Mawdhu(Fabricated) ahadith. These are the Daeef Ahadith on Knowledge that are commonly spread.
1- “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘One Faqih (knowledgeable man) is more formidable against the Shaitan than one thousand devoted worshippers.” (Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 222, Classified as Mawdhu By Allama Albani)
2- “He who imparts knowledge to those who do not deserve it, is like one who puts a necklace of jewels, pearls and gold around the neck of swines.” (Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 224, Classified as Daeef Jiddan By Allama Albani)
3- “The Messenger of Allah f said: ‘You must acquire this knowledge before it is taken away, and its taking away means that it will be lifted up.’ He joined his middle finger and the one that is next to the thumb like this, and said: ‘The scholar and the seeker of knowledge will share the reward, and there is no good in the rest of the people” (Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 228, Classified as Daeef By Allama Albani)
4- “The Messenger of Allah came out of one of his apartments one day and entered the mosque, where he saw two circles, one reciting Qur’ân and supplicating to Allah, and the other learning and teaching. The Prophet SAW said:
‘Both of them are good. These people are reciting Qur’ân and supplicating to Allah, and if He wills He will give them, and if He wills He will withhold from them. And these people are learning and teaching. Verily I have been sent as a teacher.’ Then he sat down with them.” (Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 229, Classified as Daeef By Allama Albani)
5- It was narrated that Ismâ’il said: “We entered upon Hasan to mquire after him until we filled the house. He tucked up his legs, then he (Hasan) said: ‘We entered upon Abu Hurairah to inquire after bin-i until we filled the house. He (Abu Hurairah) tucked up his legs and said: “We entered upon the Messenger of Allah until we filled the house. He was lying on his side, but when he saw us he tucked up his legs then he said: ‘After I am gone, there will come to you people seeking knowledge. Welcome them, greet them and teach them.” (Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 248, Classified as Mawdhu By Allama Albani)

Brief Comments

1- Knowledge sought with a negative intention is automatically removed from what the above sources refer to, that knowledge can become a source of harm to us and become علم لا ينفع if its hindering our way to spiritual ascension.
2- The comprehensive nature of Islam demands that all forms of knowledge helpful in building the Islamic society should be considered as a parcel of the ‘Islamic Sciences’, as was the norm when Islam was excelling in physics, mathematics and biology etc.
